Popular science

At CONTRAST, we define popular science as activities that make our research accessible and engaging to a broader audience. This includes initiatives like Science Cafés, webinars, and other outreach events designed to share knowledge beyond the scientific community. We will regularly add new activities to this section—stay tuned for updates!

"CONTRAST– science for better policies on marine contaminants " - by Samantha Martins

On June2025, CIENS hosted a breakfast webinar focused on monitoring and simulation to combat marine pollution. The event was held in collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). In the event, Samantha Martins (Project Manager, NIVA) presented «CONTRAST– science for better policies on marine contaminants”,focusing on how researchers through the CONTRAST project have developed strategies and tools to monitor, manage, and reduce the effects of harmful substances in the sea. See more details and the link to the recording of the webinar here.

Science Café: Exploring Ocean Health and Marine Ecosystems

CONTRAST presented in a Science Café in Athens, on May 2025. The postdoctoral researcher Charlotte Nakken (IMR) gave the presentation «How Proteomics Can Reveal Ocean Health», where she illustrated how proteomics can help us better understand and protect the health of our oceans. The PhD candidate Ioanna Nikolopoulou (HCMR) presented «From Surface to Depth: How Pollutants and Plankton Shape Each Other’s Fate in Marine Ecosystems», where she highlighted how pollutants impact plankton health and behavior, and in turn, how phyto- and zooplankton affect the fate of pollutants within the water column and food web. Check Ioanna´s presentation here.
