Breakfast Webinar: Monitoring and Simulation to Combat Marine Pollution
On June 10, 2025, CIENS hosted a breakfast webinar focused on monitoring and simulation to combat marine pollution. The event was held in collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).
Background:In February 2025, oil clumps were discovered along large parts of the Trøndelag coast up to the island of Vega in Nordland. This oil spill of 75 cubic meters poses a significant environmental threat. The webinar provided insights into how MET and NIVA can monitor such spill events and reduce the impact of harmful substances on vulnerable ecosystems.
The program included:
- Intro: When the alarm goes off by Øyvind Breivik
- How we locate the oil spill by Knut-Frode Dagestad, MET
- New tool tracks chemicals in the sea by Manuel Aghito, MET
- Science for better guidelines for marine pollution by Samantha Martins, NIVA
Samantha Martins from CONTRAST and NIVA presented how researchers through the CONTRAST project have developed strategies and tools to monitor, manage, and reduce the effects of harmful substances in the sea.
A recording of the webinar is available here.
