Café Scientifique: Exploring Ocean Health and Marine Ecosystems
Join us for an engaging evening at the Café Scientifique, where two CONTRAST researchers, Charlotte Nakken (IMR) and Ioanna Nikolopoulou (HCMR), will present their research. This event will be a journey into the world of marine science, with each presentation lasting approximately 15 minutes, followed by a discussion session. The total duration of the event is one hour, and there is an option to enjoy dinner at the venue.
Event Details:
- Date: May 20
- Time: 19:00 (EEST)
- Location: ATHINAION POLITEIA Cafe, Akamantos 1 & Apostolou Pavlou, Athens 105 55, Greece
Presentations:
1. How Proteomics Can Reveal Ocean Health
Presenter: Charlotte Nakken (IMR)
Abstract: Charlotte will introduce the fascinating field of proteomics and explain how proteins can act as indicators of environmental change. By studying proteins, we can uncover how individual marine organisms respond to pollution and stress, and detect changes at the community level before visible damage occurs. Using state-of-the-art approaches, Charlotte will illustrate how proteomics can help us better understand and protect the health of our oceans.
2. From Surface to Depth: How Pollutants and Plankton Shape Each Other’s Fate in Marine Ecosystems
Presenter: Ioanna Nikolopoulou (HCMR)
Ioanna will explore the interactions between marine plankton, Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) through the lens of the biological pump. By integrating a case study from the Mediterranean Sea and recent findings from ecotoxicological studies, Ioanna will discuss the consequences of these interactions on biogeochemical cycling and the fate of pollutants in marine ecosystems. She will highlight how pollutants impact plankton health and behavior, and in turn, how phyto- and zooplankton affect the fate of pollutants within the water column and food web.
We look forward to seeing you at the Science café!
